Why Ireland is a Gateway to the European Market

Explore Ireland as a gateway to the European market, combining EU membership, English-speaking environment and a skilled workforce to help international businesses expand into Europe.

A Strategic Base for European Operations

Ireland provides international companies with a base within the European Union and a route into the wider European market. Its combination of EU membership, an English-speaking environment and skilled workforce makes it an attractive location for companies establishing European operations. The International Trade Administration describes Ireland as a natural location for distribution throughout the European Union and a gateway to a market of 448 million consumers.

A Location for International Headquarters

Ireland has a long history of attracting multinational companies. More than 1,800 multinational companies operate in the country, with companies including Intel, Google and Meta having established European operations there. IDA Ireland highlights Ireland’s position as an English-speaking EU country and its suitability as an EMEA headquarters location. Its position also allows companies to connect with markets across Europe while maintaining links with North America and other international regions.

Access to a Skilled Workforce

For companies establishing European headquarters, access to talent is an important consideration. Ireland has a highly educated workforce and a strong supply of graduates, particularly in STEM-related areas. Ireland.ie reports that 52.4% of adults aged 25–64 have a bachelor’s degree or higher, while the country has a strong supply of STEM graduates. This supports businesses requiring skilled employees for technology, research, business services, and other international operations.

An English-Speaking EU Environment

Ireland’s English-speaking environment is another advantage for international companies. Businesses can operate within the EU while using English as their primary business language. Ireland’s position as an EU member also provides companies with access to the European market from within the bloc. The International Trade Administration identifies this combination of EU membership, skilled workers and English-language capability as important advantages for international businesses.

An Established Business Environment

Ireland’s wider business environment also supports international investment. The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment identifies Ireland’s openness to global markets, education and skills, EU membership, technology infrastructure and research and innovation ecosystem as important factors supporting foreign direct investment. IDA Ireland also highlights the long-term presence of multinational companies. Of the companies in its portfolio, 33% have been in Ireland for more than 20 years and 50% for more than ten years.

A Platform for Growth

Ireland’s role as a European gateway is therefore about more than location. International companies can combine access to the EU market with an English-speaking environment, skilled talent and an established multinational business community. For companies looking to prove European or EMEA operations, Ireland provides an established base from which to serve European and international markets.
